We’re lucky to have some really amazing creative tenants in our buildings, like musician Julian King. He was kind enough to let us share his perfectly decorated unit in Poth Brewery Lofts. Some Q & A with Julian:
How did you get into music? I got into music by first referencing songs for a really good friend of mine who is a professional songwriter. That led me into label meetings, and next thing I knew I was opening up for Mary J Blige. It’s been a whirlwind of adventure since 2012.
What was it like playing at the Roots Picnic? Playing at such a prestigious event (the biggest LiveNation produced event in the city), being able to sing my own music, dance, vogue, and express my artistry without limits was beyond a blessing. To be recognized on such a stage in my hometown, with so much hometown love has been incredible to digest even months later. I will forever remember that day.
How would you describe the decor/style in your apartment? I describe the decor as very bohemian chic with touches of the glitz and glam. Very open, very clean, but very cozy and bohemian. I love plants, I love natural lighting, and I love a neat clean space. This wasn’t just for the pictures: this is what my apartment looks like all the time. I can see elements of culture (being both black and Japanese), elements of music (piano, computer, concert tickets, as well as elements of fashion (bedazzled timberland boots, etc).

Powelton Village: A historic neighborhood known for its charming Victorian homes, tree-lined streets, and vibrant mix of people. Nestled near Drexel University, Powelton Village is a hub for students, artists, and professionals. The area has eclectic architecture, with colorful row houses and grand, century-old residences, community gardens, hip cafes, and art spaces that lend to the neighborhood’s creative mix of old and new.
One of our favorite pieces in the @thecivicphl Collection are these graphite birds by local sculptor @darlajacksonsculpture in the lobby.
History Class - thank you to @planphilly for the backstory and images. In the late 19th century, the Powelton section of West Philadelphia was home to wealthy industrialists like Frederick A. Poth, of @pothbrewery , a successful brewer who built a prominent presence along Powelton Avenue. In 1887, Poth commissioned A.W. Dilks to design a grand mansion at 33rd and Powelton, showcasing red brick, brownstone, and architectural elements that reflected his German Gothic heritage and the High Victorian style. Poth, along with his son-in-law Edward Schmidt, used their brewery profits to develop real estate throughout Powelton, with many of their properties designed by Dilks.
For the 3500 block of Powelton, Poth hired architect Willis Hale in 1902 to design a row of speculative houses. After selling the unfinished project to a new owner, the homes were converted into apartments, and in 1908, Samuel Milligan and Frederick Webber added stair towers and a central tower to unify the complex. The Poth Mansion became the home of Drexel University’s Alpha Pi Lambda fraternity in 1939, while the Powelton Apartments were renovated and renamed The Courts in 1998.

Glenwood Ave, in Philadelphia, is a former warehouse designed in the commercial style by prominent Philadelphia architect, Leroy B. Rothschild in 1922. It is significant under Criterion A for its association with prominent twentieth century furniture retailer, Harry C. Kahn and Son, which operated in Philadelphia between 1900 and 1961. Neighborhood Facts - Brewerytown - did you know the Brewerytown neighborhood was added to the Register of Historic Places in 1991? The Brewerytown district occupies a distinct zone along the east edge of Fairmount Park north of Girard Avenue. It extends north to Glenwood Avenue which parallels the old “Connecting Branch” of the railroad. Of the ten breweries that once stood in the seven blocks of Brewery town, the most intact is the Poth Brewery on the 3100 block of Jefferson street. Francisville
Francisville is a neighborhood in North Philadelphia, which is a section of the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its boundaries are Fairmount Avenue to the south, Girard Avenue to the north, Broad Street to the east, and Corinthian Avenue to the west. In 2000, it had a population of about 4,500.
West Village
